February SPDG Meeting:
Thursday, the 28th, 7:00 PM – 9:00 PM
at the Berkeley Finnish Hall

Join us at our February meeting for a discussion about something that doesn't come easily to every artist: selling oneself. Guest speaker Peg Conley will distill 25 years of corporate sales experience as well as lay out concrete steps you can take to master the traits needed to become successful at selling yourself and your art.

For 25 years, Peg was a “Corporate Sales Queen” before transitioning to entrepreneur and artist with her own line of greeting cards, Words and Watercolors. Peg has licensed her art with Brush Dance for use on products such as calendars and she has also worked with licensing agents, Creative Connection. This fall Peg will be introducing her first line of quilting fabric.

We can't wait to get some sage advice from this accomplished artist and sales pro!

Printsource New York recently created a powerful way to connect buyers and surface pattern design professionals from around the world: the Global Design Database. Designers, studios, trend experts, and other industry professionals can be discovered through various search options in the database, including country, industry role, or product category. Any surface pattern design professional can join the database, which has three different types of listings. You can start with just your company's information and a web link at $50 (US) per year or move all the way up to their "Top Tier Listing" which includes a portfolio page and top rankings in search results for $125 (US) per year.

If you are serious about going global in the surface pattern design industry, this database seems like a great way to start!

Starting in February, we are launching a new member promotion on our web site: FEATURED MEMBER! For an entire month, our Featured Member will have swatches of his or her surface pattern design work showcased in the SPDG web site header along with a credit and link to an online portfolio or personal web site (if applicable). We will also be dedicating a page on the site to spotlight the Featured Member, including additional samples of work and an "About"  section with bio information and anything else the member would like to share about inspiration, his or her career, and the wonderful world of surface pattern design.

To select our Featured Member every month, we will be drawing at random from a pool of names of those who are interested. If you would like to be included in the drawing, you must be a registered SPDG member and you must reply to this blog posting no later than Friday, February 3rd, 12:00 PM Pacific Standard Time. We will announce the lucky winner later that day on our blog.

If selected, you will be contacted with further information and instructions. We will need a minimum of 8 different digital images of your surface pattern design work to choose from in order to build your feature, so please make sure you will be able to provide that many if you are chosen.

Being the SPDG Featured Member will be a great way to gain exposure for you and your work.
We can't wait to start promoting you!

Surtex is only a few months away, so it's a good idea to start working out a PR plan if you haven't already! The people behind North America's most important art and design trade show posted a helpful PR strategy on their site recently, focusing on press releases. Their suggestions include when to send them, how many, and what an artist might want to include in each one, as well as advice on following up with media outlets and industry members after sending.

If you plan on attending this year's show, you might want to follow the news they post on their site and subscribe to their e-newsletter.
