Illustrative and Surface Pattern Designer
ABOUT THE DESIGNER
Who do you design for and what is your style?
I've designed for Childrenswear, RTW and Menswear as well as Social Expressions and Publishing, and consider my illustrations and patternwork a bit of an updated, offbeat, retro style. The features on my characters are bit exaggerated and I apply a lot of textures. Working in Adobe Illustrator enables me to experiment with different methods easily: sometimes I like having a clean piece, sometimes I like things looking a bit screened or imperfect.
What inspires you?
I'm motivated by anything I'm experiencing: museums, a park, tea on a rainy day, even a disagreement with someone can help develop a character or motifs! I am very influenced by Jim Flora's and Charley Harper's work, as well as Naiad and Walter Einsel, there's a reemergence of that lovely, simple style. But I also love the work of Angie Lewin, Oliver Jeffers and Shaun Tan. The two films released by the Irish studio Cartoon Saloon, The Secret of Kells and The Song of the Sea, are both breathtaking and very inspiring!
What do you love about being a designer?
I love the diversity of the projects I have the good fortune to work on. That, and the experience I gain from working with such a multiplicity of art directors and creatives. It doesn't hurt that I can work from my home studio either, with open windows and I can play music as loud as I like! ; )
What else would you like us to know about you?
I've wanted to be an entomologist most of my life, I love bees, butterflies and spiders. I also love monster movies and old-fashioned ghost stories! I've also never met a cake I didn't like, and I've baked many!
