Kimberly Kight started the blog True Up in 2008. This awesome blog seemed like a never ending trip through the fabric world. Kimberly has since moved on to co-found Cotton + Steel. Ms. Kight wrote A Field Guide to Fabric with the intention of giving the reader a step by step guide through the fabric design world.
The book is broken up into three sections. The first section covers design and color. Kight expertly defines the different types of patterns and collections designed in the industry, as well as including tutorials in pattern layout; both by hand and on the computer.
The second section covers the identification of different types of fabric, and descriptions of the different printing methods.
The third section briefly covers working in the industry, where the aim is helping you decide whether you want to design for fun or for business.
An extra feature that I really liked about this book appears at the end of each chapter. Kight includes a designer round table of 7 or so designers answering questions about choices they make in their work and with their business.
I found the book very informative without being overly complicated. It enhanced my current knowledge while also teaching me something new.
